 Dear Greyhound-Sit Command

Hi there,
Can you help me with a question I have?
Why is it difficult for a greyhound to learn or do the sit command?
Thank you very much,
Reinhard

Hello Reinhard,
Thanks for your email. According the experts Greyhounds can sit, but it is believed among Greyhound owners that they cannot sit easily due to physiological reasons. The belief is that Greyhounds do not like to sit because of their long backs and well-developed muscles, that it makes sitting an uncomfortable position. But with proper training and persistence you can teach them to sit; coming close is good- doing it is great.

However I feel that if it appears to be a little uncomfortable for the Greyhound I would not force the issue. My dog eventually, with enough training perfected every command except sit. He much preferred to lie down rather than sit, I got the impression over time that there was something inherently uncomfortable about sitting directly on his hind legs, especially on hard surfaces. So I did not force the issue any more.

The official word is that Greyhounds can sit, as other dogs do, and can be trained to do so. My caveat is, to listen to your dog and be sensitive to their needs and/or any discomfort, as they are all individuals with their own unique make up and preferences.

Thanks and Take Care
Gabriele
