I just adopted a greyhound and would like to know what dog food brand do you suggest on feeding her?  Also how many times a day?

Hi Colleen,

I would feed your greyhound a high-energy type of food as they are sprinters and expend a lot of energy when they run. Look for a higher end brand that doesn't contain too much filler. You can ask your vet and look on the list of ingredients. If the meat source is in the first three listed ingredients, it will be a better type of food. But depending on your location and what you have available I would say your local vet is the best resource for brand.

They tend to bloat so smaller portions 3 times a day is recommended and I personally would avoid wet food as Greyhounds are known to have problems with their teeth and wet food promotes plaque. I would advise cleaning your dog’s teeth often as well—this could help you to avoid a lot of dental costs in the future.

Because the same food gets boring, give your dog white rice mixed with hamburger, for a treat now and again—as lean as possible and well cooked of course. This also works if he gets sick or doesn't seem to be eating—it soothes their digestion.

Then there is always the raw food diet option (some people find it too time consuming but it is the best)—see the page on this diet.

Hope this helps.
