Subject: New dog

Hi –

My parents just adopted a greyhound and she is very well behaved – most of the time. Today she took a toy and ran through the house at top speed, bouncing off the beds and jumping on everything. Is there a way for them to prevent her from doing this? They want her to play, but she wouldn’t stop and they were afraid she was going to hurt herself. She is not a retired racing dog, but was adopted through a shelter after being put through an obedience program. They love her very much, but didn’t much like this behavior.

Hi Kelly,

I think the best advise I would give is to make sure that she is well exercised everyday. Greyhounds are sprinters and with a bit of running outside, in an enclosed area preferably (for safety), she will tire out quickly and then become the proverbial couch potato. But having said that, being a younger dog (which I am assuming here), she will have a lot more energy for a while—they do slow down as they get a bit older but all younger dogs are rambunctious.

Also give her other things to do to burn off excess energy like a bone to chew on or play tug of rope for instance. Perhaps close some of the doors, to other rooms, so she doesn't have the range to run. But training is also very important—let her know that running is for outdoors, when she starts to get too rambunctious put her in a down stay and don't scold just let her know it's appropriate and then give her something else to occupy her or take her for a walk or run outside. She is probably telling them she has some excess energy to burn off.

Lastly, if she still insists on running around let her learn from her mistakes. Bumping into the odd piece of furniture once or twice will teach her that it has consequences. I know your parents do not want to see her hurt but like a child they do learn from their mistakes.

Additional remark: ..... I am really glad your parents decided to adopt a Greyhound they really are one of the sweetest dogs in the world. My guess is that part of her exuberance is knowing that she has a home where she is loved.
