Greyhound Dog Coats
Greyhounds carry very little "insulation" due to the lack of
body fat, therefore they are more sensitive, to extremes in
hot and cold weather, than other dogs. So you do need to be
aware of their needs regarding the weather. Therefore a dog
coat in the cold climate is more than a fashion statement.
Greyhounds are inside dogs. They should never be kept outdoors
without shelter for extended periods of time. If you have a
fenced yard in which your dog can go out and take care of business,
he probably will not need to get dressed up for a quick trip
outdoors. If you do need to walk your dog in cold weather, a
warm dog coat becomes more of a necessity. If you are cold without
a coat, your dog is too. Even if you feel comfortable, if your
dog is shivering, he's cold and needs a dog coat appropriate
for the temperature and some Greyhounds are more sensitive to
cold than others.
If you walk your dog in places where salt or other chemicals
have been used to melt ice, you should have a set of booties
for him. It may look a bit silly, but those chemicals can burn
his feet and also do internal damage if he licks them off. In
extremely cold weather you should take care that his sensitive
ears are warmly covered, too. See the article Greyhound Ear
Care for ideas in respect to ear coverings.
There are different types of Greyhound dog coats available,
from fleece to quilted down as well as rain jackets depending
on where you live you may need a variety to cover different
types of weather. Because Greyhounds have a unique shape they
need dog coats that are specifically made for them. See the
related links page on this site to access good sites where you
can find great dog coats for Greyhounds. You may also find them
doing a general web site search for Greyhound dog supplies.
