DOG FOOD

The right dog food is a vital part of Greyhound dog health care

Because Greyhounds have a unique physiology, they need a different type of dog food from other breeds. The right dog food is a vital part of dog health care for your Greyhound, equally important is the kind of dog treats you feed them.

When choosing a dog food, avoid foods that have large chunks, Greyhounds tend to take large mouthfuls and swallow without chewing. This can cause choking or vomiting after eating. Also avoid the moist variety of foods. They have a lot of chemical preservatives that are hard on the Greyhound’s physiology, especially the older dog. This goes for the moist chewy dog treats as well. Especially avoid foods and treats with red die in them, these have a certain chemical in them that Greyhounds do not tolerate well. Dog treats are not often thought of as an important aspect of dog health care but like food they can effect every aspect of your dogs health.

Contrary to the myth pet Greyhounds do not need a lot of protein in their diets. Greyhounds are sprinters and notorious couch potatoes. High protein dog foods are also high in calories and for dogs that spend most of their day lounging that extra energy can cause problems from behavioral to weight gain. An excessive protein diet can be hard on the kidneys of older Greyhound dogs.
High protein dog treats are fine once in awhile. But limit the number of treats you give your dog per day. Allowing your Greyhound to gain too much weight can be unhealthy, their bone structure cannot support extra pounds.

Greyhound dog health care tips:
 When you see your dog eating grass add some greens or ¼ cup of V-8 juice
to the dog food.
 If your Greyhound has an upset stomach or diarrhea, treat it with a tablespoon of Pepto Bismol. Squirt it just inside the lips with a syringe, not down the throat.
 A good dog treat to give your Greyhound that will help keep their teeth in good shape is a knuckle bone. The shape of the bone allows the Greyhound to maximize cleaning and will preoccupy them for hours.
