Greyhound Dog Ear Care
It's a good idea to examine both the outer and inner
ear on a regular basis in order to provide the best dog ear care
for your Greyhound. Dirt and wax can be removed by swabbing the
ears with a cotton ball but don't clean further than you can see
and never use a Q-tip. If your dog jerks his head you can risk
hurting him. Greyhound dog ears are particularly sensitive. For
the optimum dog ear care you can wipe them once every 2-4 weeks.
A safe and effective ear care product that disinfects ears, dissolves
ear wax and removes foreign debris is 'Ear Care' with Tea tree
oil. It can be found at Only
Natural Pet Store
Though keep in mind excessive cleaning can unknowingly disturb
the natural balance of a dogs ears.
Greyhound ear tips are also susceptible to a condition
called Chilblains where they become cracked, dry or even bloody.
This is due to the poor circulation to the tips of Greyhound dog
ears. This can be treated with a topical antibiotic or by making
sure the ears stay warm in cold weather. It's a good idea to cover
your dog's ears by using a neck warmer or a cut off sweater sleeve
that fits snuggly. If your Greyhound does experience Chilblains
and the condition doesn't improve with care take him/her to see
your Veterinarian. Your Veterinarian will be a great source of
information in terms of maintaining dog ear care.
Ear infections, inflammation and ear mites are other
conditions that you will want to have your Veterinarian attend
to right away. Ear infections and inflammation are usually signs
of other imbalances occurring in the Greyhound's body. The contagious
condition of ear mites will present itself in an affected dog
by head shaking and persistent ear scratching and if you look
closely you can see the mites, they appear as tiny white moving
specks. The Internet is also a good source of information pertaining
to dog ear care specific to Greyhounds and in general; many
Greyhound adoption sites provide Greyhound health care advice
as well as sites provided by Veterinarians.
