The first thing that is firmly stressed by adoption agencies in greyhound dog safety is to keep your greyhound on a leash at all times when out walking. This will literally save their lives. The statistics show that 75% of greyhounds that get loose die within 24 hours, 90% of those die within the first hour. The reason for this is that X racers are trained to run as far and as fast as they can when the starting door is opened - added to that they are not familiar with traffic. Basically a loose grey hound is a dead greyhound.

Some agencies are very strict with this rule and require that as long as you own the dog you are required to keep them on leash. However, after you have your dog for a few years with a lot of persistence and training their behavior can be modified; but the instinct to run will always be strong, so it is key in greyhound dog safety to never let them off leash anywhere near traffic.

A good rule of thumb is; if your place is safe enough for a two year old it is safe enough for your greyhound.
